5 Fave NYC Workout Studios (other than Soul Cycle)
By: Laura F.
If gyms and/or runs in the park are your thing, fantastic. Personally, I need a bit more structure and personal attention to keep me focused and in shape. That’s why I LOVE fitness studios, and there is no shortness of options in NYC. No matter what you’re into, whether it be kick boxing, aqua spin, rowing, crossfit, yoga, aerial yoga, Zumba, Pilates, cycling, or Barre, there is something out there for you.
If you don’t care to settle on just one type of workout, ClassPass is a fantastic resource. ClassPass membership gives you access to some of the best fitness studios in and around NYC for only $100 a month. There are certain drawbacks such as late fees and certain classes being impossible to get into, but overall I think it’s great.
To help eliminate some of the trial and error for you, I’ve listed below my Top 5 Fav Workout Studios in NYC (besides Soul Cycle).
1. Flex Studios
Pilates – Barre – TRX
This is your chic, one-stop shop for a long, lean, and strong Giselle Bundchen bod! The equipment is state of the art, studio is spacious, and the instructors are incredibly knowledgeable. I recommend trying out one of their Flex30/30 classes if you’re new to these types of workouts or just want to get a taste of all that they have to offer.
P.S. Save your new cute Lululemon outfit for this studio and don’t forget your sticky socks!
Women’s Only – HIIT – Strength Training
Ladies, don’t forget that strength training is important! Uplift is THE place in NYC for a fantastic total body workout specifically designed for the female body. Since nobody looks cute doing burpees or running in place, the other great part about this studio is that it’s WOMEN ONLY. So embrace the struggle bus that is (for me) HIIT, and after class take advantage of all of the amenities that Uplift offers (i.e. hair dryers, hair ties, showers, face wash, etc.) to get ready for work or for drinks with the girls after.
3. Sal Anthony’s Movement Salon
This is the COOLEST studio in midtown NYC. Sal’s is a 19th century building that used to be a bar, now converted into an eclectic and super serene Pilates studio. Get ready to get your hipster on but also your work out. Most of Sal’s classes are 2-parts: Reformer and Cadillac. If you’re unfamiliar with Pilates, all you need to know is that Sal’s is legit. But don’t be intimidated, the classes are very small (max 6 per) and the instructors pay very close attention to each of their students no matter their level of experience.
Spin – Barre
Very similar to Soul Cycle, Flywheel offers a super high energy, luxe spin classes with locations all throughout NYC. They also offer barre classes which can be a fun way to mix up your workout. There’s also usually a good guy to girl ratio in Flywheel spin classes… hello Mr. Right J
Tip: Flywheel spin classes are a GREAT couples activity, especially on the weekends.
5. Pure Barre
Pure Barre is like the SoulCycle of the barre studios in NYC. Their classes are uber popular, and they have several locations in NYC. If you’ve never tried barre before, try it now! No previous dance experience required, and the work out is INCREDIBLE!
