#SWAPGOOD: Up Your Deodorant Game

Do you smell that? No, it’s not teen spirit. It’s actually us, following an intense, life-changing Soul Cycle session 😉. But before you suggest we reach for the deodorant you’ve been swiping on since puberty, press pause. The modern deodorant is chock-full of aluminum, PPG, talc, parabens, and other truly nasty stuff. These ingredients are a concoction for disaster, loaded with carcinogens and hormone inhibitors and estrogen mimickers. We should NOT have to sacrifice our health in order to feel confident+smell pretty! Instead, we propose a swap; a #swapgood to be exact. Through first-hand experience, we can attest that transforming our beauty regimens sparked big, positive change to our health. Here are a couple of suggestions to make sure you don’t have to do a “pit check”:

Soap Walla Deodorant Cream
We rave about this product because it is powerfully effective and an aromatic blend of lavender+citrus, which keeps us feeling fresh and spritely! The best part is what the deodorant is WITHOUT: no alumnium zirconium, sodium lauryl sulfate, and petroleum. Instead, it utilizes Mother Nature for vegetable powders and essential oils to absorb moisture, inhibit bacteria and WORK. That last piece is pretty critical.

Schmidt’s Deodorant Stick
If reigning Instgram workout queen Hannah Bronfman swears by it, it’s gotta be worth a try. That was our (accurate) thought process as we tried Schmidt’s deodorant in ylang-ylang+calendula. Our review? A whole lotta YES because a) it neutralizes odor with essential oils– they offer 5 different scent combos and b) it’s free from the aforementioned harmful junk like aluminum, propylene glycol, parabens & phthalate.

DIY (à la The Naturalista)

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup shea butter
  • 1/4 cup arrowroot powder
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 15 drops essential oil (I have used tea tree and lavender)

Process:

Directions:

In a bowl, mix the shea and butter and coconut oil with a fork until they form a smooth and creamy consistency. make sure there are no lumps. Then add in the arrow root and baking soda and mix thoroughly until a thick but malleable paste forms. You may want to add more arrowroot for thickness, or coconut oil for creaminess. Finally, mix in the essential oils and store in a plastic-free container at room temperature.

Another trick? Drink liquid chlorophyll. A tablespoon mixed in with purified water each day will work as an internal deodorant and combat irritating body odor. We often turn to this green goodness for its plentiful benefits that include oxygenating the blood and reenergizing our systems with the fundamental compound found in all green plants, above and under the sea. Amazing!
