Adult Beverage Alternatives

There’s more than one way to have a good time. While it’s hard to imagine any get together without a bottle or two of “social lubricant,” the trend of non-alcoholic beverages is bubbling up in bars, restaurants, and home gatherings. As more individuals seek healthier lifestyles, the demand for 0% ABV options has soared, paving the way for innovative sips that promise relaxation and conviviality without the buzz. If you’ve been craving a change to the way you get together, celebrate, and unwind, the world of softer social tonics welcomes you to take a sip.

Moderation is Key

While most of the world happily imbibes responsibly, savoring the delights of their favorite wine, beer, or spirits, there are some who feel it’s best for their well-being to limit or avoid it. Cutting back on daily drinking can improve sleep quality, digestion, mental clarity, and lowers risk of developing chronic conditions such as liver and cardiovascular disease. Reserving booze for weekends and special occasions can also assist in weight management, as spirits can be high in calories.

Sociability Without the Side Effects

One of the most compelling reasons for the surge in non-alcoholic beverage popularity is the desire to remain included and comfortable in social settings without feeling the pressure to drink. Sober sippers are discovering that they can enjoy the same level of sociability as their spirited pals even if they have to drive home, have a busy night ahead, or a big meeting in the morning.

Mocktails and zero-proof beers, wines, and spirits are crafted to mimic the complexity and depth of their hard counterparts, and retain that sophisticated drinking experience. The movement has also made room for other innovative relaxation sips. “Social tonics” crafted with kava, CBD, adaptogens, and herb blends are being cheersed and clinked with the same enthusiasm, as they cater to those who seek the ritual of an afternoon happy hour or a “wine” down at the end of the day, without alcohol. Expanding the libation menu also reflects a broader cultural embrace of inclusivity. Whether for health reasons, personal preference, or religious beliefs, many individuals abstain from alcohol. The availability of appealing options for all ensures that everyone can participate in the social experience of having a drink, without feeling left out or limited to water or soda.

As the ABV-free trend continues to grow, we can expect to see even more bottled and canned creativity. From botanical-infused sparkling waters to complex zero-proof potions, the future of social drinking is bright, flavorful, and inclusive.

Limoncello Spritzer Mocktail

Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1 “shot” 1.5 oz. or 3 Tbsp. lemon oleo-saccharum (see recipe below)
  • 1 cup lemon flavored sparkling water
  • 1 Tbsp. fresh lemon juice, or more to taste
  • Lemon wheel, for garnish

Lemon Oleo-Saccharum

Servings: 1 small batch

  • 5-6 lemons, depending on size
  • 1 cup sugar

Instructions

  • Wash lemons well. Peel to remove only the yellow rinds. Save the remainder of the fruit for future use.
  • Add the peels and sugar to a mason jar or bowl with a lid and muddle well. Cover with a lid, and let sit at room temperature at least one hour, preferably overnight, to allow oils and acids to release from the zest.
  • Using a cheesecloth or a fine strainer, strain the peels out of the liquid, pressing with the back of a spoon to release all of the sugary oil. Store covered in the refrigerator for up to one week.
