About La Paz

Indigenous homeland to both the Guaycura and Pericu tribes, Spanish explorers “discovered” La Paz for the western world in the 1500s. It was used as a port city, which is still one of its primary functions today. The most populous city in Baja California Sur, Mexico, La Paz is located on the crystal blue waters of the Sea of Cortez. The abundant ocean wildlife led Jacques Cousteau to call it the “aquarium of the world.” With thriving populations of whale sharks, blue whales, sea lions, sea turtles, rays, and myriad other ocean dwellers, you’re sure to find plenty of creatures big and small, whether viewing from land, boat, or underwater. It makes sense that the city is home to the three leading marine biology institutes in Latin America.

Due in large part to the marine biology programs, La Paz simply has a different vibe than the party-central beach cities. The population is largely students, coming from all over the globe to study the underwater world, who fill the air with a sense of ambition and discovery unmatched elsewhere. Visitors can find opportunities for adventure and education around every corner. From snorkeling with sea turtles to swimming with whale sharks, there’s an ocean of possibilities. La Paz is also home to Balandra Beach, often called Mexico’s most beautiful beach. One look at the white sand dunes and turquoise waters will leave you in total agreement. To preserve its pristine wonder, the beach is a National Park and is regulated to a limited number of visitors per day. They even reserve the first Sunday of every month for locals only, no tourists allowed!

If you’re looking for a vacation that’s more than late night tequila shots and naps on the beach, La Paz is the destination for you. Make the most of your trip with Go Baja Sailing, and go for a vacation with a certification, you’ll definitely have an experience you won’t soon forget.

How to Get to La Paz

La Paz does have its own airport, but most people find it easier to find flights into Los Cabos airport, which is a two hour drive from La Paz.
