If it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Nonstick cookware, waterproof makeup, pesticides, and most recently period-proof underwear were all advertised as miracle solutions to common frustrations, but time has proven each to be, well, poison. Formally known as per-and-polyfluoroalkyl substances, PFAS (pronounced “pee-fas”) is the handy acronym for this hazardous class of chemicals. Unlike the human lives their products claim to simplify, these toxins are permanent. They don’t dissolve. They don’t break down. They only keep moving through our water supplies, our soils, and our bodies.
